Living in Captivity is a workplace comedy set in a zoo and styled like a wildlife documentary about the mysterious species Homo sapiens. After spending four years studying apes in Africa, Alexandra Vogel returns to New York and gets a job at the local zoo, while crashing with her recently separated sister in a tiny studio apartment. Although Alex can safely navigate the jungle, she’s totally out of her element in the big city. She relates human behavior to the animal behavior she understands so well as she forges a relationship with her sister, navigates the dating scene, and learns to fit in with the other zookeepers. By the end of the season, when an opportunity to return to Africa presents itself, she chooses to stay in New York with her urban family. In every episode, we catch a glimpse of the daily lives of zookeepers and get the inside scoop on what it takes to feed a baby penguin or make sure the red pandas are “in the mood” for the one day a year that they mate. With a behind-the-scenes appeal, a unique protagonist and a quirky sense of humor, the show explores how — in this modern world — we can all sometimes feel we’re living in captivity.

When novice zookeeper Alexandra Vogel is left in charge of the zoo on the day of the arrival of a new chimpanzee troop, her disgruntled co-workers plot to sabotage her leadership role. But when bonobo apes — the porn stars of the animal kingdom — are delivered instead, Alex makes the controversial decision to put them on exhibit, resulting in a media frenzy that puts her job in jeopardy.
